  • Can I save my current recipes if I upgrade to a newer version?
Yes, But, PLEASE make sure that you do not delete your old cookbook until you have imported your recipes AND TESTED THEM to make sure that the ingredients, measures, recipes names, etc imported into the correct fields. BEFORE you try and import recipes into your NEW cookbook, open your OLD cookbook and click on the "FIND ALL Recipes" button. This will insure that all recipes get imported. then quit the old program and open the new. The easiest way to alleviate the mix up of fields problems is when you click on the "Import recipes from another version of the computer cookbook" button and select your old cookbook as the source, make sure that in the upper right hand corner where it says VIEW by: , that you select "matching names". Then just make sure that there are arrows next to all of the major fields, such as Current recipe name, Category, Current serving size, size, amount, 1, amount 2, measure 1, measure 2, ingredient 1, ingredient 2, Directions, cuisine, food group, comments, name of owner, marked file, email this recipe, temp, count, Global owners name, etc. If in doubt, check it. It only hurts you to NOT check something. Just make sure that the names that match up make sense with each other. some of the names have changed slightly from the older versions. To place the arrow in fields that do not have them, but should, just click where the arrows go (there will be a 0 there until you place the arrow there). Once everything you want is checked, and matched, click IMPORT button.

  • Can I import data from another cookbook program to The Computer Cookbook?
That depends. If you are trying to get data from another cookbook into The Computer Cookbook, it would have to be in the same formats as The Computer Cookbook, otherwise you will have to do a lot of editing. Also, you generally import the data into The Computer Cookbook, and point it to the data files from the other program. If the data is in a recognizable format, it will display it and let you choose which field you want to import into which fields of The Computer Cookbook. In the past, we have offered to help people import their data, or at least attempt to, but that is not always possible. If the data files are in a generic format, then it might be possible, but often times they require the original program even to open them for an import. We also cannot make guarantees as to when, or IF we can get to it, as many people send their files to be converted. We have had people send in 4,558 recipes from a program that groups all of the data for a recipe into a giant file, so it had to be dissected manually and pasted into The Computer Cookbook. We have offered this mainly because it makes our customers happy, but it is a very time consuming task and we cannot guarantee that we can even recover any of the recipes. If you wish to try and send us your recipe data files, we will try and take a look at them to see if we can even see the data in them without the program.

  • Can I add my own categories, food groups, etc... to The Computer Cookbook?
Yes! You can add your own categories, food groups, cuisines or amount categories. The last item in the pop up list is Edit. This allows you to type in whatever you want. (note, you have to insert it where you want it to show up in the list once the edit list shows up, since by default, it adds your entries to the end)

To view recipes, just click in the Index button to see all of your recipes, then click on the little green box on front of the recipe you want to view, and that recipe will pop up on your screen.

  • Can you make a degree sign in The Computer Cookbook?
Yes you can make a degree symbol, but it depends on which computer you are using as to how to make it (Mac or PC). I usually make the º symbol by looking at my character map and selecting the degree symbol. On my Mac, the degree symbol in Times (which is what the cookbook defaults to) is the option - 0 keys (that a zero, not O). On a windows machine the cookbook uses a Times-New Roman font. In a PC use the start - accesories-System tools-Character map to find any specific symbols or key. the degree symbol is part way down. you can click on it and drag it into the cookbook, you can tell it to copy to clipboard, then paste it into the cookbook or you can make sure your numlock is on, then hold down the Alt key while typing 0176 on your keypad. That is the only ways I know of making degree signs, but there may be others that I do not know of.

  • What is the checkbox by "My Recipe" for?
When you enter your recipes, the checkbox called "My Recipe" will automatically be checked. This is to make it easier to sort between your recipes and th ones the we provide. You could also use it to differentiate between your recips and recipes of other people, if you so choose.

  • What is the difference between the "Emergency" file and the "Backup" file?
FYI, The emergency file is an exact backup of the WHOLE recipe cookbook. the point was that each time you close your file, it "copies" the whole cookbook to this file. In case of emergency, you could rename your emergency file to The computer cookbook and be off and running again. At least that is how it is supposed to work. The backup file that you have to initiate, ONLY backs up files that are currently "Found" or visible. what this means is that if you have your whole cookbook visible, then all of the recipes will be backed up. If you have used a "FIND" request and then do the backup, only the recipes that were found would get backed up. Of course, "Hidden Recipes" are never really gone, they are just temporarily hidden to show you a specific set of data that you requested.

  • I searched for a recipe and now my recipes all seemed to have disappeared, where are they?
No need to worry, Whenever you search or print for a specific group or recipe, the cookbook "Hides" your other recipes to make it easier on you. To get all of your recipes back, just click on the "Find ALL Recipes" button.

  • When I print my recipe, it cuts off some of the recipe, any suggestions?
The boxes in Computer Cookbook are templates. All text must fit in the visible box. If it is not visible when the mouse is not inserted in the field, then it will not be visible when printed. If a recipe is too big or needs more room, I create a second copy of the recipe and title it "Recipe name part 2" and then I just continue my recipe on that page.
